Mommy Makeover

Motherhood brings countless joys, but sagging breasts, a protruding belly and stubborn fat deposits are not among them. This is why a Mommy Makeover in Lethbridge has become a popular procedure combination offered by Dr. Secretan. By combining breast and tummy procedures into one surgical experience, women are enjoying the opportunity to reclaim their pre-baby bodies, safely and effectively.

A Mommy Makeover is a fairly standard combination of procedures that are performed together in one operation (usually liposuction, tummy tuck, and breast surgery) to restore a woman’s body after child bearing. These are the most common plastic surgery procedures for women overall, and collectively address the most common effects of child bearing and breastfeeding on a woman’s body – weight gain & skin stretching in the abdomen and loss of firmness & possible “deflation” in the breasts. Breast augmentation may also be performed, if necessary or desired, and women who have had a Caesarean section may opt for scar revision.

Am I a Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

During your consultation, Dr. Secretan will help determine if a Mommy Makeover is right for you. You might be a candidate if:

  • You are finished with childbirth and breastfeeding
  • Your pregnancy has negatively affected the size and shape of your breasts
  • If you’re distressed about your sagging tummy and stretch marks
  • If pockets of fat on your waist, abdomen, arms or thighs do not improve with diet and exercise
  • Your breasts have become so much larger after childbirth that they are out of proportion with the rest of your body and they cause back pain
  • You had a C-section and now you have areas of fat hanging over your surgical scar
  • You have excess fat in the love-handle area as well as in the hips and thighs

LIPOSUCTION

Liposuction of the hips and thighs removes pockets of excess fat and achieves a shape that is in greater harmony with the rest of the body.

TUMMY TUCK

Abdominoplasty removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens the underlying abdominal muscles. It also allows for the possible elimination of stretch marks, especially if they are located in the lower part of the abdomen. The result is a flatter, firmer abdominal shape.

BREAST AUGMENTATION

Breast augmentation increases natural breast size and enhances its shape using silicone gel implants, saline implants or fat grafting.

BREAST LIFT

Breast lift surgery, also known as mastopexy, removes excess breast skin to raise, reshape and firm the breasts.

BREAST REDUCTION

Breast reduction surgery removes fat and glandular tissue and tightens skin to produce smaller, lighter breasts.

POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS

Each year thousands of women undergo successful mommy makeover surgery, experience no major problems and are happy with the results. Significant complication from mommy makeover surgery are infrequent. However, make sure that you understand what surgery involves, including possible risks, complications and follow-up care. Mommy makeover surgery poses various risks, including:

  • Anesthesia risks
  • Bleeding
  • Poor wound healing
  • Blood clots
  • Possible need for revisional surgery

Because a mommy makeover is comprised of several different procedures, each procedure poses its own surgery risks in addition to the risks mentioned above. These risks may include:

Tummy Tuck and Liposuction
  • Pain, swelling, and bruising during the first few weeks after surgery
  • Visible scarring at the points of incision
  • Excess scarring
  • Uneven contours may occur in spite of efforts to balance skin and fat removal
  • Rippling of the skin Fluid accumulation beneath the skin (seroma)
  • An accumulation of blood under the skin that may require removal (hematoma)
  • Skin loss (tissue necrosis)
  • Change skin sensation
  • Nerve damage
  • Sensation changes
  • Possible need for revisions or additional procedures
Breast Lift, Reduction, and Augmentation
  • A tightening of the scar tissue which can make the breast feel hard and can distort the shape of the breast implant (capsular contracture)
  • Diminished sensitivity or permanent loss of sensation in the nipples or areas of breast skin
  • Breast pain
  • Rare implant leakage or rupture. If the implant is saline-filled, it deflates and the body harmlessly absorbs the saline solution. If the implant is filled with silicone gel, the gel may alter the shape of the breast, requiring implant replacement.
  • Irregularities or asymmetry in the shape and size of the breasts. (This could occur as a result of changes during the healing process, or surgery might not successfully correct pre-existing asymmetry).
  • The areolas (pigmented area around the nipples) may appear uneven
  • Rarely, the blood supply to the nipple or areola is interrupted during a breast lift. This can damage breast tissue in the area and lead to the partial or total loss of the nipple or areola.
  • Rarely, poor healing can cause scars to become thick and wide
  • Difficulty breastfeeding

Like any major surgery, a mommy makeover surgery poses a risk of bleeding, infection and an adverse reaction to anesthesia. It’s also possible to have an allergic reaction to the surgical tape or other materials used during or after the procedure. You can help minimize certain risks by following the advice and instruction of your surgeon, both before and after your procedure.

SURGERY FEES

When you receive a quote for surgery from Dr. Secretan, all of the costs below are included in your quote which will enable you to know the exact payment required.

If you are considering having multiple cosmetic procedures done, speak with Dr. Secretan about the possibility of having them all done at once.

For patients whose insurance will not cover cosmetic procedures, there are financing options available. Often patients will use a credit card or a personal line of credit, however our clinic offers financing through companies like Medicard that specialize in financing for cosmetic procedures.

ANESTHESIA FEES

These fees cover the cost of the anesthetist, whose presence is required during and immediately after your surgery, and the anesthesia administered.

HOSPITAL OR PRIVATE SURGICAL FACILITY FEES

These fees cover the cost of where your surgery is scheduled to take place.

THE SURGEON FEES

In addition to your actual surgery, these fees also cover all pre-operative and post-operative follow-up appointments with your surgeon. Miscellaneous costs include the compression garment and any supplies you’ll need while you recover (such as sterile bandages).

DAY OF SURGERY

Most plastic surgery procedures are performed as an out patient, although overnight facilities are available for patients undergoing larger procedures or for those that are form out of town or come from a distance.

BEFORE SURGERY

Do not eat after midnight the night prior to surgery. You may drink clear fluids only, up to 6 hours prior to your scheduled surgery time.

We will see you at the clinic before your surgery. We will usually do a few measurements and make several standardized markings before going in to the operating room. Surgery is usually carried out under general anaesthesia, but for some patients, and depending upon the procedure, local anaesthesia with intravenous sedation is used. Our highly skilled anaesthesia and nursing staff are there with you at all times to provide you with a safe experience in as caring and compassionate manner as possible.

SURGERY

The length of surgery depends upon the procedure that you are undergoing. At the conclusion of the surgery, a very light bandage will be applied over the incision site. If you are having breast surgery, you will wake up already wearing your sports bra. The anaesthetist will have given you pain medication prior to the end of the surgery to minimize postoperative discomfort. From the operating room, you will be taken to our recovery area where you will stay until you are ready to go home. A recovery room nurse will be attending to you at all times to monitor your recovery and to ensure that you are comfortable.

AFTER SURGERY

Once you are ready to be discharged home, we will see you to review your postoperative instructions. You will be given a number to contact us or one of our staff 24 hours a day should you need any advice after leaving the clinic.

Because you will have been under an anesthetic, your judgment and coordination may be affected for up to 24 hours. It is important to have a responsible adult pick you up from the clinic and stay with you the first night following surgery.

AFTER CARE & FOLLOW UP

Following your surgery, there are several things that you should be aware of. Most important, if there is anything at all that you are uncertain about, please make sure to contact our office.

SWELLING & BRUISING

This is normal after surgery and will subside gradually over 7-10 days. You can minimize swelling by limiting your physical activity and applying ice packs to the surgical area during the first few days.

Bruising following surgery is rare although with some procedures such as liposuction, bruising can be more noticeable. If bruising does occur, it will disappear within the first two weeks.

PAIN

Most patients experience some pain and discomfort following surgery. This usually subsides after several days. You will have been given a prescription for pain medication which should adequately control any discomfort. Please take it as prescribed on the bottle. If you experience increasing pain not responding to medication, please notify the office.

TEMPERATURE

The body temperature may rise slightly over 38°C after surgery. If fever persists after 24 hours, despite drinking liberal amounts of fluid, notify our office.

BANDAGES

Following your surgery, there may be a small bandage placed over your incision. It should be kept dry until your first postoperative visit with Dr. Secretan. At the first visit following surgery, any bandages will be removed and you will be given instructions for how to best manage the scar.

STITCHES

Dr. Secretan uses dissolvable stitches only so there are no stitches to be removed. With some facial procedures, a few non dissolvable stitches may be used. They will be removed at the first post op visit. Once the initial bandage has been removed it is fine to wash normally over the incision with soap and water. You can then apply the scar gel as provided by Dr. Secretan.

BRAS (FOR BREAST SURGERY)

In general, you should wear a comfortable cotton sports bra day and night for the first month after surgery. This will help to provide you with support during the early healing period. Underwire and push-up bras can be worn after the first month.

EXERCISE

It is fine to start gentle physical activity in the second week after surgery. This includes walking and stretching. Heavier activities such as jogging, aerobics classes, contact sports and upper body weights should be avoided for one month.
